„Modelling the Unseen—The Future of Spatial Experiences in Extended Reality“: Vortrag der Künstlerin Dr. Paula Strunden

Der Jour Fixe der Fachgruppe Architektur der ABK Stuttgart geht in eine neue Runde! Unter dem Titel „Digital“ lotet die Gesprächsreihe mittels dreier Vorträge aktuelle Positionen zu Digitalität in der Architektur aus, besonders im Hinblick auf die Veränderungen durch KI, Robotik und Mixed Reality. Die internationalen Vortragenden berichten aus ihrer Praxis, Forschung und Lehre zu Themen, Methoden und digitalen Produkten. Im Fokus stehen sowohl ein experimenteller Umgang mit digitalen Formaten in der Architektur, welche gewohnte Praxen herausfordern und radikal verändern, als auch ein kritischer Blick auf Zugang und Verhältnismäßigkeit digitaler Anwendungen vor dem Hintergrund der sozialen und ökologischen Krisen unserer Zeit.

Zu Gast für den zweiten Abend ist die transdisziplinäre Künstlerin Dr. Paula Strunden, Gastprofessorin an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, mit ihrem Vortrag „Modelling the Unseen—The Future of Spatial Experiences in Extended Reality“:

This talk explores how Extended Reality (xR) technologies are transforming spatial design through critical and feminist perspectives, inspired by early 1990s VR pioneers and their concept of ‚embodied virtuality‘. Paula Strunden presents three xR models developed during her design-led PhD – Rhetorical Bodies, Infra-thin Magick, and Alison’s Room – to show how virtual and physical worlds can merge to expand sensory and cognitive experience. She introduces the concept of ‘enveloped cognition’, emphasizing the interplay between bodily perception and immersive environments, and previews her upcoming project Mirrorworlds / Imagine: A Space of Us All, which she currently develops as part of her ETH Postdoc Fellowship with Gramazio Kohler Research.

Paula Maya Strunden is a transdisciplinary artist and researcher who studied architecture in Vienna, Paris, and London. She worked with Herzog & de Meuron and Raumlabor Berlin, and completed her PhD through the Horizon 2020 project TACK – Communities of Tacit Knowledge. Her dissertation on multisensory perception in extended reality won the 2023/24 Academy of Fine Arts Vienna Prize. Her immersive xR models have been nominated twice for the Dutch Film Award Gouden Calf and exhibited internationally at the Royal Academy of Arts London, Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam, Ars Electronica Linz, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and MAK Vienna. As part of her research into female pioneers of virtual technologies, she founded the educational platform www.xr-atlas.org and has lectured at institutions such as the Bartlett UCL, Architectural Association London, Angewandte Vienna, Academy van Bouwkunst Amsterdam, and UdK Berlin. In 2025, she served as an acting professor at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
