The ABK’s Equal Opportunities Office is committed to promoting equal opportunities at all levels.

In addition to ensuring the constitutionally mandated equal opportunities for women and men, the Office focuses on gender equality for all and takes an intersectional approach to promoting equality and diversity. Consequently, the Office’s remit also includes, for example, the concerns of LGBTQIA* people.

The aim is to counteract existing discrimination, to support those affected, and to promote equal opportunities for all members of the university community, regardless of gender, age, skin colour, physical appearance, social and cultural background, sexual or gender identity, religion, nationality, or mental and physical condition.

Other areas of responsibility include promoting work-life balance, staff and organisational policy, abuse of power, bullying, stalking, harassment and inappropriate behaviour, as well as gender- and diversity-sensitive language. The equal opportunities officer is also the point of contact for matters relating to fair behaviour in day-to-day interactions.

All enquiries and discussions are treated in confidence. If desired or necessary, the Equal Opportunities Officer will refer individuals to further support services or official complaints bodies.

Through its Equal Opportunities Officer, the university is externally represented on the following self-governing bodies:

  • Meetings of the appointment and selection committees with voting rights
  • Participation in Senate meetings with voting rights
  • Participation in University Board meetings in an advisory capacity

Family and Studies

Student parents are juggling their studies under particular circumstances. For many, it is a challenge to organise their studies, manage childcare and ensure they can make ends meet.

For students with children, there are measures in place to make things easier, such as leave of absence, BAföG, tuition fees, examination regulations and special support programmes. The Equal Opportunities Officers, the Office of Student Affairs and the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart can advise you.

The University of Stuttgart has a very detailed website on the topic of ‘Family-friendly university’.

Childcare provided by Studierendenwerk Stuttgart

The Studierendenwerk’s daycare centres are located in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg. They primarily accept children of students. Priority is also given to children whose siblings already attend the respective daycare centre, and particularly to children of single parents.
