As a public university in the state of Baden-Württemberg, the ABK Stuttgart is self-governed. All relevant decisions concerning study programmes, teaching, research and the organisation of the academy are taken by its governing bodies and committees.
Governing Bodies
Rectorate
The Rectorate manages the university as a central collegial body. It consists of elected full-time and part-time members. The Rectorate prepares the meetings of the Senate and its committees and implements their resolutions and the resolutions of the University Board. The Rectorate consists of several areas of responsibility.

The Senate is the central body of ABK Stuttgart. It is elected by the members of the Academy. The representatives of all status groups make decisions on issues relating to research, practice of art, artistic development projects, teaching, studying and further education.

Committees
Study Commissions
The study commissions are responsible for all activities related to teaching and learning. They draw up recommendations for the further development and improvement of the courses and course contents, including the use of the funds provided for academics and teaching. The study commissions are also involved in the evaluation of teaching, taking into account student units and seminar feedback. ABK Stuttgart has established five study commissions: Architecture, Design, Fine Arts/Art Education as well as Conservation and Art Studies and Aesthetics.

Advisory Board for Information and Communications Technologies (BIT)
The Advisory Board for Information and Communications Technologies (BIT) advises the university management board on all issues concerning the strategic development of the IT infrastructure. Issues of concern to the departments, the central facilities, the students and the administration need to be communicated by their respective representatives, so that they can be included in this process. The IT Advisory Board communicates with the Coordinating Committee for the Provision of Information pursuant to Section 28 (3) of the LHG (consisting of the Head of the Computer Centre, the Digital Teaching and Learning Unit and the Head of the Library), as well as the Information Security Officer and the Data Protection Officer.

Coordination Committee for Information Provision
The Coordination Committee for Information Provision, established under Section 28(3) of the LHG, advises the university management on all matters relating to the strategic development of information provision. The committee maintains regular contact with the IT Advisory Board.

Occupational Health and Safety Committee (ASA)
ABK Stuttgart’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee consists of members of the university management board, the staff council, the medical service as well as occupational safety experts and safety officers.
Members of the students’ parliament participate in the quarterly meetings (as permanent guests of the committee).
