Workshops

A key feature of the ABK Stuttgart’s distinctive profile is its more than thirty workshops and laboratories, which are designed and equipped as teaching and experimental facilities. On the one hand, they offer students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with a wide range of techniques, skills and subject areas; on the other, they support them in realising their artistic development projects. Independent work, autonomy and self-confidence are central to the teaching philosophy. The focus is not on the production of an object, but on gaining insight through engagement with techniques and materials and active participation in the respective processes. This is the fundamental prerequisite for working independently and for the autonomous development of artistic and design concepts.

The Bauhaus principle applies, encompassing both the applied and fine arts: „Die Beherrschung des Handwerks ist für jeden Künstler unerlässlich. Darin liegt die Quelle der schöpferischen Phantasie“ (Walter Gropius).

The curriculum developed for this purpose in the workshops is independent and spans different subject classes; to a large extent, it also spans different subject groups.
