Library
The ABK Stuttgart Art and University Library is a combined reference and lending library that provides students and teachers from all departments with relevant literature and media on the Weißenhof campus.
The ABK Library offers national and international publications on the subjects of Fine Arts, Art Studies (Art History, Art Theory and Aesthetics, Art Education, Museology), Philosophy, Photography, Film, Architecture, Product and Graphic Design, Textile Design, Fashion and Performing Arts (Theatre, Dance).
The collection focuses on monographs and exhibition catalogues on 20th and 21st century art.
150 continuously updated periodicals (magazines, series, yearbooks, daily and weekly newspapers) provide information on current artistic and design events.
The extensive holdings of the ABK library, the bright rooms and comfortable seating facilitate academic work as well as inspiration for one’s own creative processes.
Further information and helpful materials for literature research are available on the ABK portal.
Usage
The ABK library is a combined reference and lending library. The reading room is open to the public during the stated opening hours. Only ABK members can borrow media.
Subject-specific literature on the restoration courses can be found at the respective locations in Birkenwaldstraße, Fellbach and Esslingen.
A total of over 50 reading places and 5 PC workstations are available for use on site. For academic purposes, a supervision scanner and a multifunction device for copying, scanning and printing in colour can be used. Copyright regulations must be observed.
User regulations
The user regulations form the legal basis for library use:
Exhibitions
The exhibition series ‘Inside AKA’ offers all classes and teachers at ABK the opportunity to exhibit their own work in the library. Four in-house display cases are available to showcase the work effectively. It is also possible to use the space for other artistic formats.
Project „Bib-Lab“
The project „Bib-Lab. Vom traditionellen Lern- und Kommunikationsort zum kunsthochschulspezifischen digitalen Kreativ- und Wissensraum“ received funding for the period from 2019 to 2021 as part of the „BW-BigDIWA – Wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken gestalten den digitalen Wandel“ funding programme from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK).
The ‘Bib-Lab’ has enabled the technical equipment and furnishings of the ABK library to be significantly expanded, creating a contemporary learning and working environment for students, researchers, teachers and staff at the art college.
ABK students from the Art Education, Industrial Design, Architecture and Textile Design courses have designed works of art and comfortable seating elements for the ‘Bib-Lab’, which contribute to improving the quality of the ABK library’s premises and provide plenty of space for relaxed reading of catalogues, current magazines and newspapers.
