Body, Theory and Poetics of the Performative
Inhalt
The practical Master’s programme Body, Theory and Poetics of the Performative (KTPP) – the first of its kind in Germany – is dedicated to the field of performance within the tradition of the visual arts. It enables students to develop an in-depth artistic stance within the field of performance. It is aimed at artists who wish to further develop their practice and enhance their theoretical skills, as well as at curators, scenographers, researchers and others engaged in artistic practice.
The programme centres on the body, understood as a site of action, expression and resistance. The programme is based on each student’s artistic exploration, which is linked to theory. The M.F.A. encompasses various artistic formats, including performances, books, graphic works, seminars, exhibitions and stage productions.

Course content
The vision of the KTPP M.F.A. programme – ‘Launching the poetry of my body with the tootsies of my brain. Thoughts about a new M.F.A. concept’ – and the adventure it sets out have shaped the programme since its inception in 2018.
The M.F.A. in Body, Theory and Poetics of the Performative understands performance as a broad, inclusive concept. The programme explores what performance is and what it can be. Working with the material, with the body and with language, as well as theoretical reflection, are understood as distinct yet inextricably linked practices that converge in artistic work on and with the performative.
The key questions addressed by the degree programme are:
- Can the body become a site of resistance and a basis for action if it is produced by social power?
- If it has become impossible to formulate binding poetics of artistic practice, is the formulation of singular practices not the path to a universal, to a different kind of politics?
- If theoretical work is always linked to the social and material conditions of its own production, is theory not also the place where these conditions, our perception of them and their consequences can be changed in practice?
The exploration of these questions, which are central to any artistic work, finds a privileged place within the field of performance art, because here the body, theory and poetics are inextricably linked.
The M.F.A. enables students – and, time and again, the teaching staff as well – to develop their practice from a technical, theoretical and organisational perspective. The focus is on the artistic exploration rather than on a finished ‘product’. Individual artistic practice exists in a constant tension with collective work: collective processes enable individual works and allow them to emerge. Diverse artistic practices, different backgrounds of experience and varied artistic positions coexist and stand side by side.
Collective forms of critique and individual reviews form the core of the course programme. This process is presented and discussed in a final examination discussion at the end of the semester. In addition to these project-based modules, in-depth courses and seminars are offered in the fields of audio, video, movement, writing, lighting and stagecraft, with a view to refining artistic tools and enabling students to present their own work to a professional standard.
For teaching, projects and individual work, students have exclusive use of the Heusteigtheater experimental stage (Experimentierbühne) during the winter term, as well as access all year round to spacious facilities (movement studio, audio and video lab) on Mozartstraße in Stuttgart-Süd.
The M.F.A. KTPP is a full-time programme; classes are held in person.

Fellowships in partnership with Akademie Schloss Solitude
In 2013, a collaborative scholarship programme was launched between the ABK Stuttgart and the Akademie Schloss Solitude; on the ABK side, it is currently supervised by Prof. Dr Cristina Gómez Barrio and Prof. Wolfgang Mayer as part of the KTPP M.F.A. programme. The aim of the scholarship is to make a significant contribution to the practice and teaching of performance art. The fellowship creates a platform for a fruitful exchange between fellows at the Akademie Schloss Solitude and students on the M.F.A. KTPP programme, which respects the respective institutional roles whilst linking Solitude’s international context with the Stuttgart art scene.

Branch offices
Experimentierbühne Heusteigstraße
Heusteigstraße 45, 70180 Stuttgart
The experimental stage at the Heusteigtheater is available to M.F.A. students during the winter semester. In addition to the ongoing courses and regular workshops, the theatre space on Heusteigstraße serves as a venue for the development and realisation of various experimental artistic formats. Here, students gain an insight into the use of lighting and stage technology and have access to the technical equipment and the adjoining woodworking and metalworking workshops. Alongside the spaces on Mozartstraße, the experimental stage enables students to realise their ideas and concepts within a spatial context, drawing on their work with diverse forms of staging and engaging in free creative work at the intersection of performance, theatre and dance.
Mozartstraße Studios
Mozartstraße 51 (1st and 3rd floors), 70180 Stuttgart
In addition to the Heusteigtheater experimental theatre (Experimentierbühne), the degree programme has further facilities at its disposal across two floors on Mozartstraße. These include workspaces for seminars, events and artistic experiments, a fully equipped sound studio with a recording room, a computer workshop and a communal kitchen. The degree programme has a well-stocked store of technical equipment, which students can borrow and use. At the Mozartstraße branch, students have the opportunity to work on collaborative and individual artistic projects in the studios, alongside subject-specific courses, and to present these projects.
