Partial degree programme Intermedia Art
Inhalt
In the Art Education degree programme, the subject of Intermedia Art (Intermediales Gestalten, IMG) offers an alternative to the second academic subject (e.g. German or Mathematics) at a partner university. The combination of Fine Art and IMG as a second artistic-academic major is therefore aimed at those who wish to focus entirely on teaching art at grammar schools. The two main subjects, Fine Art and IMG, are studied in parallel at the ABK Stuttgart.
This model (the option of choosing IMG as a second artistic-academic major instead of a scientific subject) is specific to the state of Baden-Württemberg and applies exclusively there.

Course content
The Intermedia Art (IMG) programme focuses on the examination of space and time and their artistic exploration. Both are regarded as artistic materials and open up a wide range of forms of expression (e.g. video and sound works, cinematic observations, animations, installations, performances, participatory projects). The emphasis is on a research-based, experimental approach which, in addition to practical implementation, also encompasses observation, analysis and reflection – increasingly with regard to digital tools, algorithmic processes and new technologies that are transforming perception and design.
Another key focus is the study of everyday life and everyday culture – using the concepts and cognitive tools at our disposal: What surrounds us, what shapes us? How do material and immaterial spaces affect us, and how do they structure our time? What impact do seemingly trivial matters have, and how do the media, consumerism, AI and new technological developments influence our society and our personal lives?
Students develop their own research questions and explore the potential for artistic practice to engage with and reflect on these issues. This process strengthens media literacy, fosters an awareness of social and technological interconnections, and provides ways to link future teaching to the real-life experiences of pupils.
Two semesters in the Architecture Department
In order to broaden their artistic practice to include applied methods and ways of thinking, IMG students spend two semesters studying a specially tailored programme offered by the Architecture Department at the ABK Stuttgart. In the first and third semesters, the focus is on site-specific issues, design processes and prototyping in the context of architecture and public space.
Interdisciplinary Projects
The IMG curriculum also includes open courses from other applied disciplines at the ABK Stuttgart (e.g. communication, textile and industrial design, or stage design). These insights form an integral part of the degree programme and enable students to familiarise themselves with different ways of working and designing. At the same time, they open up new perspectives for students’ own artistic development and strengthen their ability to address a wide range of connections and subject areas in art lessons, within the framework of the curriculum.
Courses in art history, aesthetics and art education
In addition to artistic practice, the programme also includes a component focusing on art studies. IMG students have access to a wide range of modules in art history, art theory and aesthetics, as well as in educational studies and an additional IMG-specific module on art education.
Final examinations
B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts)
