Questions regarding the module examination
Degree programmes Fine Arts, KTPP, Art Education, Intermedia Arts (B.F.A. and M.Ed.):
How can I register?
Course registration = examination registration
Since the 2025/2026 winter semester, registration for an ABK course in the art degree programmes has automatically constituted registration for the examination. You can always find the courses, the corresponding module and the lecturer(s) in the course catalogue.
Please note: Registration for module examinations is therefore no longer handled by the Examination Office or the Office of the Art Department.
Nevertheless, the Examination Office and the Office of the Art Department provide regular and detailed updates on the new procedure for module examinations via the ABK email address.
Information required for registration with the examiner:
It is important that you include the following details in your email registration:
- Your full name
- Degree and degree programme
- The module to be examined
- and, for modules with varying ECTS credits, the number of ECTS credits
You must also register for the intermediate diploma in Fine Arts directly with the two examiners. To do so, please read the information below carefully in the section ‘Registration for the Intermediate Diploma in Fine Arts’
Can I withdraw from a module examination?
If you do not wish to sit an examination for this module, you must inform the examiner of this no later than seven days before the examination date. This is set out in the current Study and Examination Regulations for the Department of Art.
What do I do if I am ill on the day of the exam?
If you are ill on the day of the examination, you must consult a doctor immediately, who will issue a medical certificate covering both the day of the examination and the illness. The medical certificate must be submitted without delay:
| Study programme | Submit the medical certificate to … |
|---|---|
| Fine Arts, KTPP, Art Education, IMG | Office of the Department of Art |

What happens if I miss the exam without a valid reason?

The same applies if a written examination is not completed within the specified time limit.
Can I sit an exam whilst on leave of absence?
As a general rule, no examination requirements may be fulfilled whilst on leave of absence. In exceptional cases, the relevant examination board may, upon application, authorise the fulfilment of examination requirements whilst on leave of absence (e.g. for the recognition of a mandatory internship undertaken during a period of leave of absence).
Enrolment in modules at other universities
If you are taking modules, for example at the HMDK or the University of Stuttgart, and wish to have them credited as ABK modules, these must be approved via the credit transfer form and by the Examination Board, and finally submitted via kunst.pruefungsverwaltung@abk-stuttgart.de.

How do I get my degree certificate?
Once all modules and the final examination have been successfully completed and the grades have been submitted to the relevant Examination Office or departmental office, your degree certificate will be drawn up by the Examination Office and circulated for signatures by the Rector’s Office and the relevant chair(s) of the Examination Board. Once the degree certificate has been fully signed, you will be contacted by the ABK reception. This means that it may take up to 6 weeks for your degree certificate to be issued. The Examination Office has no influence over this processing time, even if you require your degree certificate particularly urgently.
Can the standard period of study be extended?
The standard period of study specifies the number of semesters within which the degree programme can be completed. This is set out in the relevant study and examination regulations for your degree programme.
In order to alleviate the particular hardships faced by students studying under the coronavirus conditions, the German government has extended the standard duration of study and the time limits for the right to sit examinations – in the case of the ABK, for intermediate diplomas and final theses:
Extension of individual standard periods of study due to the coronavirus pandemic
For all students enrolled in the summer semester 2020, winter semester 2020/2021, summer semester 2021 and/or winter semester 2021/2022, an individual standard duration of study – which differs from the standard duration of study and is extended by one semester for each of these semesters – applies. The extension of the standard period of study is governed by Section 29(3a) of the Higher Education Act (LHG) and the Regulation on the Extension of the Standard Period of Study.
Extension of the right to sit examinations for intermediate diplomas and final theses due to the coronavirus pandemic
All students enrolled in the summer semester 2020, winter semester 2020/2021, summer semester 2021 and/or winter semester 2021/2022 will have their examination entitlement extended – by one semester for each of these semesters – up to a maximum of three semesters in total. The relevant examination entitlement for each degree programme is set out in accordance with the ABK’s examination regulations. The extension of the individual deadline for the examination entitlement is governed by Section 32(5a) of the Higher Education Act (LHG).
Questions about the school internship semester (SPS)
The school internship semester (SPS) is mandatory for all students on the M.Ed. Master’s programme in Art Education. It serves as professional preparation and offers the final opportunity within the course to gain practical insight into the profession. Furthermore, it enables students to gain a thorough understanding of the entire scope of work within a school setting, under the professional guidance of schools and teacher training and development centres.
When do I have to complete the internship semester?
The school internship semester (SPS) always begins in the winter semester and lasts 12 weeks (from September to December).
According to the standard study plan, the SPS is completed in the 3rd semester if you start your studies in the winter semester, and in the 2nd semester if you start in the summer semester.
When and where do I need to register for the internship semester?
Registration for the internship semester takes place in May. In April, the ABK Stuttgart Examination Office will send students the codes they need for registration via their ABK email address. Students must then register for the SPS independently via the online platform of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport:
I’ve completed the internship semester – what happens next?
Once the school internship semester has been passed, the relevant school must issue the students with a certificate. This must be submitted by the students to the Examinations Office (digitally or in hard copy).
Further information can be found at lehrer-online-bw.de or by contacting the Examination Office at ABK Stuttgart.
