The Textiles Task Force (TFT) is an initiative of the Textile Design degree programme. It facilitates and promotes innovative creative developments in textile design and fosters dialogue between the academic, professional and wider textile communities.

TFT aims to strengthen and raise the profile of the vibrant field of textile design, with its vast and diverse range of textile products, creative processes and practitioners. Organised around three key areas – materials, technologies and digital crafts – which expand the traditional understanding of textiles in a forward-looking way, the TFT creates space for an innovative, creative engagement with textiles and enables direct participation in contemporary textile working processes. As part of the Task Force Textiles, outstanding textile designers, amongst others, are supported with well-funded working grants. Workshops, lectures and exhibitions bring textile works and processes to life. The fundamental approach here is to forge a dynamic link between professional, academic and public spheres.

Scholarships

The Task Force Textiles (TFT) awards three-month working grants every two years to textile designers and textile artists, focusing on materials, technologies and digital crafts. The grant, amounting to 1,650 euros per month, enables fellowship holders to work freely on independent projects relating to the aforementioned topics. In addition, the TFT creates opportunities for productive exchange and for the high-profile public presentation of the works and their creative processes. Details of the next call for applications (expected in 2025) will then be available on this page.

Exhibitions

The Task Force Textiles (TFT) presents the work of scholarship holders Sophie Ringgenburger and Ursula Wagner (2023), as well as Lauren Luckert da Costa Tavares, Anna Resei and Sarah Schrof (2021). The artistic projects, created as part of the three-month working scholarships, explore the key themes of materials, technologies and digital crafts within the medium of textiles.

The projects involve innovative combinations of hand-dyed yarns with industrial 3D knitting technology, as well as virtual textile simulations and physical textile fragments, which challenge the notion of craftsmanship as a purely analogue practice, highlight the enchanting nature of physical phenomena, and place traditional hand embroidery in a contemporary context.

Task Force Textiles – Exhibition I

The Task Force Textiles Exhibition I took place from 14 to 19 December 2021 in the atrium of the Neubau 2 at the ABK Stuttgart.

Task Force Textiles – Exhibition II

The Task Force Textiles Exhibition II took place from 11 to 27 May 2022 at the Projektraum AKKU in Stuttgart.

Workshopsand Events

The Textiles Task Force (TFT) organises and initiates a variety of events promoting dialogue within the textile sector. In the TFT workshops, which focus on materials, technologies and digital crafts, students work alongside external experts. The TFT Lecture Series, a hybrid format combining lectures and discussions, is aimed at members of the public with an interest in textiles. Here, established and emerging textile designers present their work and approaches, whilst current and relevant topics in textile design are also discussed. For the TFT – Work in Progress events, scholarship holders organise independent events in a variety of formats, tailored to their respective projects and areas of focus, thereby appealing to different audiences. The Textile Talks, organised by students at the ABK Stuttgart, in which various potential career paths in textile design are discussed in a very open and personal manner, are aimed at current students and alumni.
